IGRS Niagara Landfill Gas Recovery and Destruction Project

The CarbonNeutral Company is pleased to offer carbon offsets from the IGRS Niagara Landfill Gas Recovery and Destruction Project, as featured on CarbonOffsetList.org, Environmental Defense Fund’s guide to credible, high-quality carbon offset projects.

Project Overview

Methane gas, one of the most powerful greenhouse gases, is released into the atmosphere as landfill trash decomposes.  Projects that capture methane – a gas 21 times more powerful than carbon dioxide – are essential to fighting climate change.

The IGRS Niagara Landfill Gas Recovery and Destruction Project, located in Ontario, Canada, was developed by Integrated Gas Recovery Services, Inc. (IGRS) in March 2002, to collect, capture and recover landfill gas released from the East Landfill.

Once captured, IGRS transmits the gas to the Abitibi Consolidated Recycled Paper Mill, where it replaces natural gas to help power the mill’s steam plant.  The benefits to the environment are twofold; the methane gas from the landfill is captured and converted into energy, thereby preventing it from entering the atmosphere while also providing a source of green energy for the mill.
